         3x + 2y = 18 --------- (a)

         4x – y = 2------------ (b)

 

Step 1 : Multiply with appropriate factors so that the coefficient of y is numerically same but opposite in sign

(b) × 2   `=>` 8x – 2y = 4

(a)  x 1  `=>`  3x + 2y = 18

 

Step 2 : Add the two equations to eiminate y

            `=>`11x      = 22

               x = 22/11

               x = 2

Step 3 : Now plug in x = 2 in the equation number (1) as follows:

3x + 2y = 10   `=>`3(2) + 2y = 18

                      `=>`2y = 18 - 6 = 12

                      y =12/2 = 6.

                Hence we get  y = 6

Ex 2 :    Solve

              3x + 2y = 23

               x – y = 1  

Sol:      Here let us call the equations as 1 and 2.

              3x + 2y = 23 ---------(a)

              x – y = 1------------(b)

 

Step 1 : Multiply by the appropriate numbers

             (b) × 2   `=>`2x – 2y = 2

             (a)x 1   `=>` 3x + 2y = 23

 

Step 2 : Add the two equation and eliminate y

            5x   = 25

            x = 25/5= 5

                    Hence we get x = 5

 

Step 3 : Now plug in x = 5 in the equation number (1) as follows:

3x + 2y = 23 `=>`3(5) + 2y = 23

                  `=>` 2y = 23 -15 = 8

                     y =8/2 = 4

                       Hence we get  y = 4.

 

Therefore, the solution of the  elimination method calculator are x = 5, y = 4.
